LA JOLLA, Calif.—UC San Diego baseball defeated CSU Bakersfield, 8-3, on Friday evening in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (13-6, 4-0 Big West) opened the three-game series with the Roadrunners (8-12, 0-4 Big West) with their eighth consecutive victory.
Matt Halbach accounted for four of the Tritons' eight runs, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run homerun—his second of the season.
Brandon Larson finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and
Brock Kleszcz finished 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Ryan Forcucci (2-0) earned the victory out of the bullpen, pitching 3.0 shutout innings and allowing just one hit with one walk and three strikeouts.
Izaak Martinez turned in 2.0 perfect innings with three strikeouts and faced the minimum six batters to close out the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped out in front early, scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Halbach. CSUB tied the game an inning later with two RBI singles to knot things up, 2-2.
The Roadrunners took the lead in the top of the third with another RBI single. However, the Tritons responded immediately to regain the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
UC San Diego scored on an RBI single by Larson and a two-RBI double by Kleszcz to lead 5-3. The Tritons continued to put the pressure on the CSUB defense, scoring a run in the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by an RBI double by Halbach to extend their lead, 8-3.
Forcucci and Martinez combined to retire the final 11 batters in order to secure victory for UC San Diego and improve to 4-0 in conference play.
