Second Half Comeback by No. 11 Indiana Dooms No. 16 UC San Diego

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – No. 16 UC San Diego held a 7-4 lead at halftime but 11th-ranked Indiana mounted a successful second-half comeback to earn a 12-9 win over the Tritons Sunday in both teams' final game at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

Heading into Big West play this coming Friday, UC San Diego is 5-11 overall. Indiana, who is 3-0 against the Tritons this season, upped its record to 13-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tied 2-2 after the opening quarter, UC San Diego out-scored Indiana 5-2 in the second stanza. However, the Hoosiers came out of the break on fire, netting five goals and holding the Tritons scoreless in the third quarter.

At the 3:53 mark of the third, Indiana's Louisa Downes scored to tie it at 7-7. Downes struck again at 1:15, giving the Hoosiers their first lead since they were up 2-1 late in the first quarter. Indiana stayed ahead the rest of the way. 

Redshirt sophomore Caroline Christl and junior Annika Arroyo accounted for seven of UC San Diego's nine goals as Christl found the back of the net a career-high four times and Arroyo scored three times. Both Tritons finished with an assist as well. Sophomores Courtney Okumura and Kendall Thomas each had a single goal.

UC San Diego goalkeeper Lexi Stahl made 13 saves in the game.

Downes racked up four goals for Indiana. Zoe Crouch, Grace Klingler, and Kallie White all scored three times. In net for the Hoosiers, not only did Mary Askew make 18 saves, she also scored a goal at the very end of the third quarter to give her team a 9-7 lead.

Overall UC. San Diego had a 36-33 advantage in shots. The Tritons scored four power play goals in seven opportunities. Indiana was just one-for-six on the power play.

TRITON TIDBITS
Caroline Christl's previous career-best for goals scored was three, which she has done twice this season.
• Triton goalie Lexi Stahl has finished with a double-digit save total four times in 2023. 
• Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer, Stahl made a career-high 17 saves and earned the victory.
• UC San Diego and Indiana had already met twice this season with the Hoosiers winning both close games by scores of 6-5 and 12-10.
• Named after water polo icon Barbara Kalbus, the tournament has been run annually since 2007.

UP NEXT
UC San Diego opens Big West play on Friday, March 3, at seventh-ranked Long Beach State. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the Ken Lindgren Aquatic Center.
