SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – On the road at Cal Poly, UC San Diego men's soccer lost to the Mustangs in a 3-1 result on Sunday afternoon in San Luis Obispo.
The Tritons move to 2-8-3 overall and 1-2-1 in Big West play, while the Mustangs advance to 4-5-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Striking first, Cal Poly went up 1-0 on the Tritons in the 32nd minute. Cal Poly was able to stay on top until the 40th minute when the Tritons forced an own goal to draw even with the host before the half finished.
Threading through the Mustang defense,
Jonah Kawamura sent the ball up the line to
Connor Place, who dumped the ball to
Matthew Lin. Place then shot to the center of the box as Lin took the ball to the corner to cross it to Place. The ball ricocheted off the Mustang defense and into the back of the net.
The Tritons were able to take four shots in the first half with two on-target. Cal Poly took five of their own shots and put two on-target.
The Mustangs retook the lead in the 60th minute as they scored after a shot rebounded and then sent back in by Cal Poly. Down by a goal, the Tritons tried four different times to equalize, forcing only one save from the Mustangs.
In the final minute of play, the Tritons earned a corner kick, pulling everyone into the Mustang box including Triton goalie,
Mitchell Wilson. Tragedy struck for the gold and blue as the corner was cleared and the Mustangs ran it back to score the third and final goal in an empty net.
