Tritons Bounce Back in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Traveling to Riverside for the midweek conference matchup, UC San Diego men's soccer defeated UC Riverside in a 5-2 rout on Wednesday night.

The Tritons advance to 3-8-3 overall and 2-2-1 in Big West play, while the Highlanders move to 1-9-3 overall and 1-3-1 in Big West play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Riverside notched the first goal in the second minute, shocking the Tritons with the quick goal. They pulled ahead to 2-0 in the 12th minute as another Highlander goal found the back of the net.

The Tritons upped their pressure to earn a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Carter Jacobus feigned a kick before Alessandro Allen sent the ball in looking for Max Carvalho who was crashing on the backside. Allen's kick hit the back post and ricocheted into the net to bring the Tritons within one, 2-1.

The gold and blue equalized two minutes later as Carvalho fought for possession in the box to finally bury the goal with a flying kick.

After working the ball around the field, Brian Arens fended off his attackers to find James Redington who found Iñaki Iribarren in the box for his eighth goal of the season.

Entering the second half, the Tritons led the Highlanders by a goal at 3-2. In the 49th minute, UCR earned a red card after taking down a Triton on a breakaway. Two minutes later, Allen was brought down and fouled in the 51st minute, earning a penalty kick. Converting on the PK earned the gold and blue another insurance goal.

As play continued, the Highlanders grew more physical committing a total of 10 fouls in the second 45 with three cards.

The Tritons did not let up on their attack and the continued pressure earned them a fifth and final goal in the 89th minute. Carter Jacobus worked all night on the wing to send the ball across for his teammates, but his goal came with no assist as he wove his way through the UCR defense. Taking them one way and then the other, he sent the ball in to the far side bottom corner, far out of the reach of the hosts.
