Tritons Sweep Cal State Fullerton

UC San Diego defeated the Titans, 3-0, on Thursday evening

FULLERTON, Calif.—UC San Diego women's volleyball earned a 3-0 sweep on the road at Cal State Fullerton on Thursday evening in Titan Gym. The Tritons (12-9, 4-5 Big West) moved to 5-0 in the all-time series with the Titans (1-17, 0-9 Big West).
 
Ava McInnes recorded double-figure kills for the 16th time this season, collecting a match-high 14 kills. Middles Jasmine Saran and Juliette Bokor added eight and six respectively. Lauren Brooker (18 assists, 10 digs) and Nevada Knowles (17 assists, 10 digs) split time at the setter position, each recording a double-double. 
 
Defensively, Jasmine Saran led the way at the net with six blocks, while Emily McDaniel and Katie Rapp added three apiece. Natalie Repetti led the way in the back court with a match-high 13 digs. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set, forcing an early timeout for the Titans. CSUF responded out of the timeout with a five-point run to close the gap. UC San Diego maintained the lead down the stretch before a 5-1 scoring run pulled the Titans within one point late, 21-20. The Tritons closed out the set with three straight points to take the opening frame, 25-21.
 
The second set remained closed with the teams trading the lead to a 14-12 Fullerton advantage. UC San Diego then began to pull away, putting together a 9-2 scoring run to create distance, 21-16. Cal State Fullerton rallied late once again to pull within one point, 22-21, but the teams traded side outs the rest of the way and the Tritons took the second set, 25-23. 
 
UC San Diego came out hot to begin the third and final set, jumping out to a 7-1 lead. The Titans slowly chipped away at the lead to pull within three, 13-10, but the Tritons went on a five-point scoring run to build their lead back, 18-10. Fullerton then responded with a 8-1 run of its own to pull within one, 19-18. However, UC San Diego held off the late rally and took the final frame, 25-21, to secure the sweep.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Ava McInnes recorded her sixth consecutive match with double-figure kills and 16th this season.
  • Lauren Brooker recorded her sixth double-double of the season and Nevada Knowles recorded her third.
  • UC San Diego held the slight advantage in aces (5-4) and blocks (8-7), as well as kills (47-35) and digs (62-52).
  • With the win, the Tritons moved to 5-0 in the all-time series with Cal State Fullerton.
