No. 11 UC San Diego Splits Again on Final Day of Winter Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 11th-ranked UC San Diego women's water polo team split a pair of matches Sunday to wrap up action at UC Santa Barbara's Winter Invitational.

In the morning, the Tritons were defeated by third-ranked UCLA, 16-2. The afternoon match featured a UC San Diego win against Pomona-Pitzer, 13-2. 

The Tritons finished the season-opening tourney with a 2-2 mark.

On Saturday, they were edged, 12-10, by No. 14 Indiana before taking a 19-5 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nine different Tritons scored against Pomona-Pitzer. Annika Arroyo, Caroline Christl, Lucia Doak, and Kenzie Larson accounted for eight goals as they each finished with two.

In net, goalie Lexi Stahl made a total of nine saves.

After the opening quarter, UC San Diego held a 4-0 lead. The Tritons added another three and the Sagehens netted their first goal of the game in the second frame, making it 7-1 Tritons heading into halftime.

The second half of the game saw UC San Diego out-score Pomona-Pitzer 2-0 in the third quarter and 4-1 in the fourth.

Against UCLA, the Tritons scored their two goals in the first quarter, one coming from Sofia Munatones at 4:54, the other coming from Courtney Okumura at 1:09.

The Bruins scored four times in the first, five times in the second, and four times in the third.

Over the four games in Santa Barbara, Kendall Thomas scored a team-best seven goals. Arroyo, Doak, and freshman Maya Layden all found the net six times.
UP NEXT
UC San Diego heads to the East Coast to compete in the Princeton Invite. The Tritons will face Princeton, Wagner, Bucknell, and Long Island over Jan. 28 and 29.
