Brown Leads Tritons to Victory with a Career Day

UC San Diego defeated CSU Bakersfield, 62-50, on Saturday afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif.–Sydney Brown became the sixth Triton in program history to record 1,000 points and 600 rebounds, leading UC San Diego women's basketball to a 62-50 victory over CSU Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (6-9, 3-2 Big West) improved to 3-2 in the D-I series (7-12 all-time) against the Roadrunners (4-10, 1-5 Big West).
 
Brown finished with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Izzy Forsyth and Park Montgomery also finished in double-figures with 12 points and 10 points respectively. Emily Cangelosi tallied nine rebounds and Forsyth added eight for the Tritons. Courtni Thompson led the team with four assists, Bridget Mullings recorded two blocked shots and Forsyth added two steals.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the opening quarter behind six points from Brown. The Roadrunners responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead, 11-8 with 4:44 to play in the period. UC San Diego tied the game late but CSUB hit back-to-back baskets to end the quarter with a 17-13 lead.
 
The Tritons got hot in the second period, putting together a 10-1 run to open the quarter and retake the lead, 23-18. UC San Diego held the Roadrunners to just six points in the quarter and took a 30-23 lead into the halftime break.
 
CSU Bakersfield put together a six-point run to open the second half, but the Tritons responded with 12-0 run including back-to-back threes from Brown. UC San Diego extended its advantage to as many as 14 points in the quarter and took a 49-40 lead into the final quarter break.
 
The Tritons outscored CSUB 9-3 to open the final quarter to build their largest lead of the contest, 58-43. The teams traded four-point runs down the stretch and the Tritons secured the victory, 62-50. 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Sydney Brown became the 13th Triton to record 1,000 career points, with a three-pointer in the opening two minutes of the game. She also became the sixth Triton to record 1,000 points and 600 rebounds at UC San Diego.
    • In the contest Brown recorded her third double-double of the season.
  • The Tritons held the advantage in rebounds (44-32), points off of turnovers (17-13), points in the paint (18-14) and went 14-for-17 at the free throw line.
  • UC San Diego starters were Sydney Brown, Emily Cangelosi, Izzy Forsyth, Julia Macabuhay and Parker Montgomery.
