Late Jacobus PK Lifts Tritons Past UNLV

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego sophomore Carter Jacobus converted a penalty kick with 6:59 to play, leading the Tritons to a one-nil victory over visiting UNLV on Sunday night at Triton Soccer Stadium.
 
The shutout was UC San Diego's third clean sheet of the season as the Tritons improved to 4-1-1 overall playing in their second Division I season.
 
The Rebels are now 0-3-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with each team earning some solid scoring chances. The Rebels registered nine first half shots while UC San Diego had four. UNLV had three shots on frame – including one late in the 43rd minute, but UC San Diego keeper Dominic Peters made three saves early to keep the match scoreless.
 
As the second half began, the Tritons brought on senior goalkeeper Nick Shor for the first time in 2022.
 
The match remained scoreless late, when UNLV was called for a hand ball in the box with 6:59 to play. Sophomore Carter Jacobus took the penalty kick for UC San Diego, beating the Rebels' keeper to his right to give the Tritons a one-nil lead late.
 
The Tritons earned five corners to four for the Rebels. UNLV held a 13-11 advantage in shots.
 
Shor was credited with his first victory of the season.
