LA JOLLA, Calif. – Behind
Dominic Peters' career and season-high single-match record of 12 saves, UC San Diego remained even with the University of San Diego at zeroes in their Thursday night matchup.
Â
The Tritons move to 4-1-2 while USD moves to 1-3-3.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half, UC San Diego took six shots against the USD defense with two shots on frame. The Tritons' pressure came from the attacking combination of
Jack Hagan,
Nick Cirrito, and
Max Carvalho. Cirrito sent a header just wide of the net after a cross and hard run down the left-hand side from
Alan Kim.
Â
Â
On one of two Triton corners, Carvalho challenged with a header of his own inside the box. The Toreros responded with eight shots, three of which were on frame but stopped by keeper
Dominic Peters. The crosstown foes continued to battle, but both remained scoreless through the first 45.
Â
The second half began with a Torero yellow card as the play grew more aggressive and physical, with 17 fouls and three yellow cards recorded between the two teams. Despite the foul calls, neither team let up with UC San Diego recording seven shots to the Toreros 10. Peters recorded nine saves in the second half as USD fought to find the back of the net.
Â
Â
The Tritons' managed to find the frame two more times in the second with Cirrito and Carvalho pressing hard for a goal. Despite both teams' increased attacks, sheets remained clean with the final score of 0-0.
