SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On Sunday night, UC San Diego toppled No. 22 Santa Clara in a shutout match with two second half goals from
Max Carvalho and
Mason Haubrich.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first half neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Tritons took two shots to the Broncos' six. The teams combined for a total of 17 fouls in the first half as the battle for goals grew more physical.

Both teams continued to press and challenge each other as another 13 fouls were recorded between them in the second half. UC San Diego continued to attack Santa Clara's defensive line and were able to find a hole as
Carter Jacobus passed up to
Max Carvalho who tapped back to him for a give and go. Jacobus sent the ball left, leading Carvalho on a run to find the bottom left corner of the net to put the Tritons up 1-0 in the 59th minute.

An insurance goal came for the gold and blue in the 76th minute as
Mason Haubrich came down the right field line and put his defender on his heels to send a shot just past the Broncos' goalie.
Nick Cirrito was ready to rebound the save, but the ball spun past the goal line to make the score 2-0.

The Tritons' victory at Stevens Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. marks the first time since 2020 that the Broncos have lost on their home field, and the first time since 2019 they have lost to a non-conference opponent.

With a resounding upset over a top 25 team, head coach
Jon Pascale commented on how proud he is of the way the team played tonight, "we have a hardworking group; it was their energy and their enthusiasm that made the difference in tonight's match. We are looking forward to getting back home and getting back to work."
