LA JOLLA, Calif. - Members of the UC San Diego fencing team have been busy posting strong performances in competition at the domestic and international levels this summer.

On the international front, two current Tritons and two incoming Tritons were in action recently.
• Bella Balogh represented Hungary in the European Championships and placed 82
nd in Women's Epee

Rafaella Gomes represented Brazil in the Pan-American Championships, finishing 16
th in Women's Foil
• Senior
Vedran Markota represented Croatia in the European Championships and placed 39
th in Men's Epee
• Jerry Pan finished 2
nd in both Junior and Senior Men's Saber at the Canadian Championships
In addition, Gomes and Markota will compete in the World Fencing Championships, July 15-23 in Cairo, Egypt.
"Our program is getting better every year and looking at these individual results at national and international levels validates our strategy of being able to attract and develop talent," said UC San Diego head coach
Juan Ignacio Calderon. "We all have a good feeling about this coming season, but we need to remain focused and committed to fulfill the ever-growing expectations in performance and scholar-athlete experience. We are certainly on the right path."

After two decades as one of the most successful programs in NCAA Division II, the UC San Diego intercollegiate athletics program began a new era in 2020 as a member of the Big West Conference in NCAA Division I. The 23-sport Tritons earned 30 team and nearly 150 individual national championships during its time in Divisions II and III and helped guide 1,400 scholar-athletes to All-America honors.
