NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – In the series opener on Friday afternoon, UC San Diego topped CSUN with a score of 5-1.
The Tritons move to 24-24 overall and 12-10 in the Big West while CSUN moves to 20-29 overall and 10-12 in the Big West.
The Tritons were led by second baseman
Isabel Lavrov who was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI recorded.
Deena Pederson and
Kelley Renner both recorded a run and an RBI.
Keila Bosinger,
Mariah Melendez, and
Reilly Erickson each recorded a run in today's matchup.
In the circle for the Tritons,
Jada Cecil got the start against the Matadors and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
Shelby Thompson came in as relief in the bottom of the seventh and allowed no runs on one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped on the board in the top of the third with a single run when
Mariah Melendez scored on a single from
Deena Pederson. Melendez laced a single past the shortstop to be the lead off runner. Two sac bunts from
Kelley Renner and
Morgan Eng advanced Melendez to second and then third. On a 0-1 count, Pederson sent a single to left field to plate Melendez and take the lead, 1-0.
Keila Bosinger powered a triple to the right field fence to start off the top of the fourth. She remained on third through two outs, until
Bobbi Aguirre was able to reach on a Matador fielding error and Bosinger scored.
Alexa DeMarse advanced Aguirre to second with a single laced through the right side, but both were left stranded with the score 2-0.
CSUN responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single run, 2-1.
In the fifth, the Tritons recorded two runs as
Kelley Renner led off with a single through the right side. Pederson recorded another single, powered to the right field, advancing Renner into scoring position. On a ground out to the shortstop, both advanced a base. A doubled sent out to left center by
Isabel Lavrov allowed both runs to score and extend the lead to 4-1.
The Tritons' final run came in the sixth when Aguirre was walked by the Matador's pitcher.
Reilly Erickson entered as a pinch runner for Aguirre and was immediately advanced to third by a double from DeMarse. On a ground out to second base, DeMarse advanced to third and Erickson made it home to score.
