RIVERSIDE, Calif. – On May 1, in the series finale, UC San Diego topped UC Riverside 2-1 to avoid the series sweep.
The Tritons move to 23-24 overall and 11-10 in the Big West. The Highlanders move to 20-23 overall and 11-10 in the Big West.
Jada Cecil got the start for the Tritons, allowing one run on two hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Gabby Williams relieved Cecil in the middle of the sixth and allowed no runs with one hit, one strikeout, and no walks.
At the plate, third baseman
Keila Bosinger led the Tritons, going 2-for-3 and recording a solo-homerun in the second. First baseman
Bobbi Aguirre was 1-for-2 and drove in
Deena Pederson with a squeeze bunt in the first.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The gold and blue jumped on the board early when
Bobbi Aguirre batted in shortstop
Deena Pederson in the first. In her first at-bat, Pederson powered a triple to the right center fence to jump start the Tritons' offense. Then Aguirre was able to plate Pederson on a successful squeeze bunt that allowed her to reach on a fielder's choice. She was unfortunately stranded as the next two Triton's fouled out to the Highlander's catcher.
UC Riverside tied the game up at ones in the bottom of the first with a solo homerun.
In the second,
Keila Bosinger led off for the Tritons. She battled through eight pitches and on a full count sent a no-doubter over the center field fence for a Triton solo-homerun. Bosinger was able to take back the lead, 2-1, with her seventh homerun of the season.
Jada Cecil and
Gabby Williams had a total of seven strikeouts and stranded six UCR batters over seven innings of work.
