LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the series opener on Friday night, UC San Diego shutout UC Davis with a score of 3-0.
The Tritons move to 21-21 overall and 9-7 in the Big West while UC Davis drops to 18-23 overall and 6-10 in the Big West.
The Tritons were led by right fielder
Deena Pederson who was 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI recorded.
Marissa Hassis and
Isabel Lavrov each recorded an RBI on the night as well.
In the circle for the Tritons,
Jada Cecil got the start against the Aggies and allowed no runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Gabby Williams came in as relief in the top of the sixth and allowed no runs, no hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Williams recorded her first collegiate save tonight.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons struck first in the bottom of the third with a single run scored by
Kelley Renner. Leading off the Triton batting order in the third, Renner laced a hit through the left side gap for a triple. On a sacrifice fly from
Deena Pederson, Renner takes the final 60 feet home to put the Tritons on the board, 1-0.
UC San Diego struck again in the fourth, playing some small ball to plate
Morgan Eng.
Clarissa Reynoso led off for the Tritons and was walked by UC Davis. Eng came on to pinch run for Reynoso and immediately stole second. On a sacrifice bunt from
Alexa DeMarse, Eng advanced to third. A suicide squeeze bunt from
Marissa Hassis plated Eng and added an insurance run on the board for the Tritons, 2-0.
Pederson started the fifth with a single laced up the middle and then advanced to second on a wild pitch from the Aggies.
Bobbi Aguirre advanced Pederson to third on a sacrifice bunt. Recording her 25th RBI of the season,
Isabel Lavrov sent a single through the left side to plate Pederson for the Tritons final run of the night.
Jada Cecil and
Gabby Williams shut out UC Davis and stranded 11 Aggies on base over seven innings.
TRITON TIDBITS
- Isabel Lavrov leads the team in batting average at .339 and tonight recorded her 25th RBI of the season.
- Gabby Williams recorded her first collegiate save tonight, coming on in the sixth with three insurances runs on the board. She allowed no hits and no walks during her two innings of work.
- Tonight, the Tritons recorded four errors, the most all season. UC San Diego is 12-16 on the season during games where at least one error was committed.
- UC San Diego moves to 7-19 in their all-time vs. record against UC Davis.

UC San Diego is back tomorrow, April 23, for a doubleheader against the Aggies to close out the three-game series. Both games will broadcast on ESPN+ with Ted Mendenhall and Tracy Warren calling the action.
