Late Rally Not Enough to Overcome Aztecs

Meeting for the first time since 1989, the UC San Diego Tritons fell to the San Diego State Aztecs in a midweek matchup on Wednesday night.

LA JOLLA, Calif. – In the first meeting since 1989, UC San Diego fell to San Diego State with a score of 4-3 on Wednesday night, April 20, at the Triton Softball Field.

The Tritons move to 20-21 overall while San Diego State moves to 30-12 overall.

The Tritons were led by third baseman Keila Bosinger, who was 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored. Second baseman Isabel Lavrov recorded one hit, one run, and one RBI. Catcher Clarissa Reynoso recorded two RBI on one hit.

In the circle for the Tritons, all three lefthand pitchers saw some action. Combining for five innings of work, Shelby Thompson, Kaia Simpson, and Gabby Williams allowed three runs on five hits with 2 strikeouts from Williams. Finishing in the circle, Jada Cecil allowed one run on two hits with two walks and one strikeout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Aztecs jumped on the board immediately in the top of the first with two quick runs to take the lead. In the fourth and the sixth they tacked on two more to take the lead into the bottom of the sixth, 4-0.

Prior to the sixth inning the Tritons had one recorded hit from designated player Alexa DeMarse who was eventually stranded on third after two sac bunts from Reilly Erickson and Kelley Renner advanced her twice.

A late rally from the Tritons began with Keila Bosinger who laced a single past the Aztecs shortstop to become the lead runner. As another out was recorded, Bobbi Aguirre came to the plate facing two outs when she sent a chopper over the shortstop to reach and advance Bosinger into scoring position.

Cleanup hitter Isabel Lavrov then sent another chopper to the left side, this time over the third baseman to advance Aguirre and plate Bosinger. During Clarissa Reynoso's at-bat, a wild pitch from the Aztec's advanced the Tritons to third and second.

On a 1-0 count, Reynoso laced a hard hit through the gap on the left side to plate Aguirre. With the go-ahead signal, Lavrov turned the corner for the final 60 ft home, sliding past the San Diego State catcher for the run bringing the Tritons within one at 4-3.

The Tritons' rally came too late as the Aztecs were able to strand the tying and winning runs in the sixth and seventh.
