HONOLULU – Playing in their first Big West match on the road this season, the No. 12 UC San Diego women's water polo team (17-9, 2-2 BWC) fell 15-6 to fifth-ranked Hawai'i (13-5, 4-0 BWC).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons found themselves down from the outset, surrendering seven unanswered goals to the Rainbow Wahine to begin the match. UC San Diego found its first goal on a strike from
Karis Couch with 5:01 remaining in the second period before surrendering three additional goals to close the first half trailing 10-1.
In the second half, the Tritons found more offensive success, with
Lucia Doak and Couch contributing goals to cut the Hawai'i lead to 11-3 with 2:21 remaining in the third period, with the defense holding the Rainbow Wahine to just one goal. In the fourth period, UC San Diego added three more goals, including two from
Annika Arroyo, whose goal with 2:57 remaining in the match lessened the deficit to 14-6.

"Hawai'i played amazing and we just came out flat," said UC San Diego head coach
Brad Kreutzkamp. "We know we're much better and we're playing well, we just have to pick it up these last three weeks, and I'm confident that we will."

- Difficulties on Power Play – The Tritons converted on three of eight advantages against the Rainbow Warriors, while Hawai'i made UC San Diego pay for its mistakes with two goals on just three power plays.
- Eight Straight with Goals – Annika Arroyo netted a pair against Hawai'i, giving her goals in eight consecutive matches. In five of those eight matches, she has scored two or more goals, helping her to reach 35 goals on the year.
- Record Watch –Bennett Bugelli recorded 2 more saves against Hawai'i, bringing her career total up to 772 career saves. In the win over UCSB at the Kalbus Invitational, Bugelli moved up to third all-time, passing Maryam Hadiashar, 697 saves, and Leona Mason, 701 saves. This season, she has already leapt up from ninth place after making 25 saves at the UCSB Winter Invite. Next on the list is Jefi Paulsen with 852 saves.
