HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos (6-4) got on the board quickly, platting a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single.Â
Â
UC San Diego got a great opportunity in the sixth, loading the bases with one out but a pop-up and a ground ball to the first baseman kept the Tritons off the board. SCU did most of its damage later that inning, adding three more runs to the board to take a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Tritons finally broke through in the seventh, with a two-out RBI single from Robinson to score
Jalen Smith from second. A walk put runners in scoring position again but a strikeout ended the inning and UC San Diego trailed 4-1.
Â
Santa Clara tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the seventh, before UC San Diego could shift the momentum.
Â
UC San Diego would get one more run in the eighth after Filia tripled to left field and Lucchetti brought him home with a ground-out, but the Tritons would still trail 6-2.
Â
The Tritons rallied one final time in the ninth, with two runners on and one out, but a foul-out and a pop-up ended the comeback.
