Late Inning Rally Trouble for Tritons at Santa Clara

UC San Diego fell to the Broncos, 8-4, in series finale on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – UC San Diego baseball fell to Santa Clara, 8-4, on Sunday afternoon at Schott Stadium. With the loss, the Tritons (6-7) get swept in a weekend series for the first time this season.

Michael Fuhrman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Tritons offensively. Nick Costello, Austin Smith and Matt Halbach were also credited with an RBI, including a solo home run for Halbach, his third of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos (7-4) got their leadoff man aboard in the first with a triple and scored on a sac-bunt in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. After that, starting pitcher Ryan Forcucci was lights out, not allowing another hit through the first five innings.

UC San Diego took the lead in the fifth with an RBI triple from Costello to plate the first run and A. Smith brought in Costello from third with a ground-out to give the Tritons the 2-1 lead.

Fuhrman added another run for the Tritons in the sixth with an RBI single up the middle to make the lead 3-1. With the Triton bullpen taking over, SCU took advantage, scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning including a three-run homerun to retake the lead 7-3.

Halbach sent a bomb over the left field wall in the top of the seventh to make it 4-7, but the rally ended there. The Broncos would get the run back in the bottom of the inning and hold on for the 8-4 victory.
