Tritons Fall to Toreros in Midweek Matchup

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – On March 30, UC San Diego fell to the University of San Diego, 3-2, in extra innings.
 
The Tritons were led by second baseman Isabel Lavrov who went 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and a stolen base. From in the circle, sophomore Gabby Williams got the start for the Tritons and allowed one run and one unearned run on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Shelby Thompson came in as relief for Williams and allowed one unearned run on three hits and no walks.
 
The Tritons move to 17-14 overall, while the Toreros move to 15-24.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons jumped on the board early, scoring in the first inning. Lead-off batter, Keila Bosinger was walked for her first at-bat. On a sac bunt from Bobbi Aguirre, Bosinger advanced into scoring position. Then a single laced up the middle by Isabel Lavrov allowed Bosinger to make it home and score, 1-0 Tritons.
 
Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Toreros responded with a run of their own from a Triton error. In the bottom of the fifth, the Toreros took the lead with another run to make the score 2-1.
 
The Tritons responded in the sixth when Aguirre was walked by the Toreros. Pinch runner, Kelley Renner came in at first for Aguirre. Renner advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a ground out. She scored on Clarissa Reynoso's sac bunt, sliding past the catcher, 2-2.
 
Threatening in the seventh with three hits, UC San Diego was unable to score against the Torero defense. Then in the bottom of the eighth inning, USD winning runner reached on a Triton error.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Today marks the first time this season the Tritons have recorded eight hits and lost.
  • In their last matchup in 2021, the Tritons split a doubleheader with the Toreros. UC San Diego took the first game, 7-3, and dropped the second game by 1, 5-4.
  • This is the 80th time the Tritons and Toreros have faced one another; the Tritons move to 42-38 in their all-time vs. record.
UP NEXT
This weekend, the Tritons return to Big West conference play to host the Rainbow Wahine at the Triton Softball Field for a three-game series beginning on Friday, April 1 at 5:00 pm. The series will finish with a doubleheader on April 2 with first pitch of game one at 1:00 pm. All three games will broadcast on ESPN+.
