Pair of Homeruns Not Enough in Series Finale

UC San Diego fell to Cal Poly, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon

LA JOLLA, Calif.—In the series finale, UC San Diego baseball fell to Cal Poly, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Triton Ballpark. With the loss the Tritons fell 1-2 in their first Big West series of the season.

The Tritons (8-15, 1-2 Big West) got both of their runs on a pair of solo homeruns by Blake FitzGerald and Anthony Lucchetti. FitzGerald finished the day 2-for-4, while Noah Sudyka went 2-for-3 with a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mustangs (13-10, 5-1 Big West) got a runner to third in both the first and second innings but starting pitcher Ryan Forcucci and the Tritons kept Cal Poly off the board. It was UC San Diego that took the early lead with a solo homerun by Blake FitzGerald—his second of the season—in the bottom of the second.

Cal Poly was quick to answer, hanging two runs on the board in the top of the third to take the lead, 2-1. The Mustangs added a run in the fifth and sixth to build a 4-1 advantage.

The Tritons threatened in the sixth with two runners on and one out but a fly ball and a fielder's choice ended the rally. An inning later, UC San Diego got the leadoff man aboard before a double play cleared the bases. A pinch-hit solo homerun by Anthony Lucchetti made it 4-2, but the Tritons' threat ended there and Cal Poly took the finale 4-2 and the series 2-1.
