Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons got off to a hot start, putting up two runs in both the first and second innings.
Marc Filia got the scoring starting in the first with a two-RBI double.
Noah Sudyka and
Austin Smith both knocked RBI singles to give UC San Diego the early 4-0 lead.
Â
San Diego State threatened early, advancing runners to third in both the first and third innings but the Triton defense and sound pitching from
Cole Dale kept the Aztecs in check.
Â
The Tritons pushed a runner to third in the top of the sixth with one out, but back-to-back ground-out ended the threat without a run.
Â
Zach Ernisse was lights-out in relief for UC San Diego, striking out the first five batters he faced and retiring six in a row through the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
The Tritons loaded the bases in the top of the eighth with two outs but a strikeout ended the threat and kept the lead 4-0.
Â
San Diego State looked as if it would break through in the bottom of the eighth, advancing a runner to third with one out. However, a pop-up to
Michael Fuhrman and a strikeout by
Ryan Rissas ended the inning for the Tritons to keep the shutout intact.
