Tritons Unable to Overcome Early Deficit

UC San Diego Streak of Eight Consecutive Wins Comes to an End

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 12 UC San Diego women's water polo team (16-8, 2-1 BWC) fell 9-5 to 11th-ranked UC Davis (12-9, 1-1 BWC) on Friday night at Canyonview Aquatics Center, ending a streak of eight consecutive wins for the Tritons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego kept things close through the first period, with goals from Taylor Onstott and Holly Maine knotting the score at 2-2. In the second period, Lucia Doak netted a goal to give the Tritons their first lead of the match at 6:51, but the Aggies responded by going on a run of their own.

Over the next two periods, UC Davis notched six unanswered goals, bringing a modest 5-2 lead into halftime and extending their lead to 8-3 with 7:08 remaining in regulation. UC San Diego responded with a pair of goals by Onstott and Annika Arroyo before the Aggies firmly put the game out of reach with a powerplay strike from Alyssa Lengtat with 2:53 remaining. Onstott led the Tritons with two goals.

QUOTABLE
"We missed some very high percentage shots that would have kept us in the game and kept the energy going," said UC San Diego head coach Brad Kreutzkamp. "But when you fall behind by four to a team like [UC] Davis, it's going to be really tough to come back."
