UC San Diego Falls to Cal Poly in Big West Match

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Visiting Cal Poly took two of three doubles matches and swept singles action on the way to a 7-0 victory over UC San Diego Friday afternoon at Northview Tennis Courts.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego's top doubles tandem of junior Sophie Pearson and sophomore Ella Pachl won 6-3 at No. 1 but the Mustangs earned the doubles point thanks to wins at the second and third position.
 
In singles play, Pearson won the first set and went to a super tiebreaker at No. 2 despite suffering an injury early in the second set. Junior Rachel Wagner won her first set, 6-2, at No. 5 before falling in a super tiebreaker as well.

"That's a very good team and this was not our best outing," said UC San Diego head coach Liz LaPlante. "When you combine those two things, you get the result we saw today. There is plenty to learn from and we'll work hard to improve before next week."
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Cal Poly has now won both Big West meetings vs. the Tritons after a 4-1 victory in 2021.
  • The match was UC San Diego's third consecutive at home.
