Tritons Take Doubles Point Before Falling to Rainbow Wahine

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego won the doubles point to get the match started on a high note, but visiting Hawai'i swept singles action to earn a 6-1 women's tennis victory over the Tritons Thursday afternoon at Northview Tennis Courts. The loss was UC San Diego's second straight Big West setback. The match served as the conference opener for Hawai'i.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego took the doubles point to go up 1-0 over the Rainbow Wahine. The Tritons' top tandem of junior Sophie Pearson and sophomore Ella Pachl earned a 6-3 win at No. 1. After Hawai'i won 7-5 at the third position, the Tritons took the point with a win at No. 2. Freshmen Naomi Nguyen and Katelyn Vu won 7-6 (5) to give UC San Diego the lead.
 
In singles play, the Rainbow Wahine swept all six points to close out the road victory.

"We got off to a good start against a strong opponent," said UC San Diego head coach Liz LaPlante. "We need to learn to carry that momentum into singles play. We've got another tough opponent lined up in our next match.
 
TRITON TIDBITS
  • Hawai'i has now won all three Big West meetings vs. the Tritons after a pair of victories on O'ahu in 2021.
