Tritons Fall at San Jose State

UC San Diego fell to the Spartans, 70-56, on Sunday evening in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif.–UC San Diego women's basketball fell to San Jose State, 70-56, on Sunday evening in Provident Credit Union Event Center. With the loss, the all-time series between the Tritons (2-7) and the Spartans (2-8) is even, 1-1.
 
Sydney Brown led the Tritons with 18 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots. Bridget Mullings also scored in double figures with 10 points, while Parker Montgomery and Grace Talbot added seven apiece. Junae Mahan finished with a team-high four assists and two steals, while Izzy Forsyth added two steals and five rebounds. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams got off to a slow start offensively in the opening quarter. The Tritons used a 9-0 run midway through the period to take a 10-4 lead with 2:52 to play. UC San Diego held off a late surge by the Spartans to take the 13-9 lead into the first quarter break.
 
The Tritons opened the second quarter on a 7-1 run to build their largest lead of the half, 20-10. San Jose State answered down the stretch, outscoring UC San Diego 20-3 to close out period and take a 30-23 lead into the halftime break. 
 
UC San Diego opened the second half with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two points, 30-32. The Tritons kept the gap to single digits until San Jose State put together a 9-3 run to extend its lead and take a 56-45 advantage into the fourth quarter.
 
The Spartans carried the momentum into the final period, opening with a nine-point run to make it 65-45—their largest lead of the game. The Tritons rallied late, outscoring SJSU 11-5 in the final minutes, but the deficit proved too much to overcome. 
 
TRITON TIDBITS UP NEXT
UC San Diego will wrap up its non-conference slate, playing host to Seattle U on Wednesday at 12 p.m. PT in LionTree Arena. The contest is scheduled as Community Day for the Tritons and admission is free to the public. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ and live statistics will be available via UCSDTritons.com.
