LA JOLLA, Calif.–UC San Diego women's basketball defeated Seattle U, 61-56, on Wednesday afternoon in LionTree Arena. The Tritons (3-7) improved to 2-0 in the all-time series with the Redhawks (0-10).
Â
Izzy Forsyth scored a career high 23 points, adding eight rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist.
Emily Cangelosi recorded her first career double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, adding a team-high five assists and one steal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Making her first start at home, Forsyth got off to a hot shooting start, scoring seven first quarter points on a perfect 3-3 shooting. The Tritons built a 16-12 lead after the first quarter, thanks in large part to sinking six free throws.
Â
Forsyth continued to shoot the ball well in the second quarter, adding six more points, lifting UC San Diego to a 29-24 halftime advantage.
Â
Both teams struggled from the floor, with the Tritons connecting on just 29% of their shots and the Redhawks 32%. The difference came at the charity stripe, where UC San Diego connected on 13-of-16 tries. The Tritons forced 11 Seattle U turnovers during the game's first 20 minutes.
Â
UC San Diego built its largest lead of the game to begin the second half after a three-pointer by Forsyth put the Tritons up 37-25. The Tritons held on to a double-figure lead late into the quarter before an 8-2 run by the Redhawks cut the lead to five, 46-41, heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
Seattle U carried the momentum into the final period, putting together a 11-3 run to tie the game at 54-all. A timely three by
Grace Talbot and another basket by Forsyth with under a minute to play gave the Tritons the advantage and UC San Diego held on for their second home win of the season.
