Late Goal Fells Tritons in Wednesday Night Matchup

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Hosting CSUN for a midweek matchup in Big West play, UC San Diego fell to the Matadors in a 1-0 result.

The Tritons drop to 7-7-2 overall and 3-4 in the Big West while the Matadors move to 7-4-4 overall and 4-2-1 in the Big West.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Locked at zeroes through the first half, UC San Diego took three shots with two on goal to CSUN's three shots, though none were on frame for the Matadors. The Tritons threatened with a look from Alessandro Allen on a corner kick for the gold and blue. As the ball came out of the box, a cross from Jonah Kawamura set Allen up for a header on the back post that was stopped by the Matadors' goalie.

The board remained empty as CSUN opened the second half with an offensive flurry, firing six shots in the first 13 minutes to get ahead early. The Tritons kept their defensive shape to dominate possession for the next 30 minutes. Taking four shots with one on frame, UC San Diego attempted to find the Matadors' seams.

A dangerous shot from Mason Haubrich came in the 70th minute as he found himself in a one-v-one situation on the right side of the 18-yard box. As the beat his defender, Haubrich fired a shot that rattled the left post of the woodwork.

Another critical moment came when defender, Euan Clark, crashed the goal on a striking cross from Carter Jacobus. Clark caught the ball neatly on the outside of his foot to redirect it to the right side of the net, but the Matadors' goalie was waiting to make the save.

With less than five minutes to go, CSUN's captain found the back of the net on a header. The Tritons ran out of time as they looked to equalize.
