LA JOLLA, Calif.–UC San Diego women's volleyball snapped a five-match losing streak with their first Big West sweep of the season, 3-0, over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night at LionTree Arena.
The Tritons (9-11, 2-6 Big West) took down the Titans (9-7, 3-5 Big West) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-14, 26-24.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego hit .293 as a team, their best hitting percentage since Sept. 2 against Nicholls. The Tritons held the advantage in all statistical categories, including aces (3-1), blocks (9-5), assists (45-34), digs (56-50) and kills (47-38).
After her career performance the night before,
Ava McInnes led the offense again with 15 kills and added two blocks, while
Emily McDaniel added 13 kills.
Juliette Bokor tallied five kills and team-best four blocks, while
Katie Rapp recorded three blocks.
Izzi Strand finished with 40 assists and seven digs, while
Naya Dong led the team with 21 digs and
Natalie Repetti added 10.
The Tritons jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the opening set, behind four kills from McInnes. The Titans pulled within two, 9-7, but UC San Diego hung on to the lead down the stretch and took the first set easily, 25-18.
In the second set, UC San Diego used scoring runs of five points and four points to build an early 9-6 lead. The Tritons went on a 10-2 scoring run late, including six consecutive points with
Zaria Henderson at the service line to lead 23-11 and eventually took the set, 25-14.
The third set remained close to start, with UC San Diego leading 6-5 before Fullerton went on a six-point scoring run to take the lead, 11-6. The Tritons answered with a 6-0 run of their own to retake the lead 13-12. It looked as if the match was headed to a fourth set after the Titans went on another 6-1 run to lead 20-16. However, the Tritons would not give up, battling back to a 24-24 tie. UC San Diego scored the final three points to take the set, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.
TRITON TIDBITS
- It was the first Big West sweep for the Tritons and third of the season.
- The .293 hitting percentage was UC San Diego's best since the Tritons hit .303 against Nicholls on Sept. 2.
- With the win, UC San Diego improved to 3-0 against Cal State Fullerton and 1-0 this season.
