Tritons Drop Big West Opener to UC Davis

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego kicked off conference play with a home game in front of a packed crowd of 814 people on Wednesday night. The Tritons fell by a 1-0 score to conference favorite, UC Davis. The Tritons are now 3-5-0 overall and 0-1-0 in Big West action, while the Aggies improve to 5-5-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the Big West.
 
UC Davis has won five consecutive matches.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego started off the game with dangerous crosses from senior forward Nick Cirrito and two shots by junior midfielder Mason Haubrich. UC San Diego's defense held strong until the 28' when a UC Davis player headed the ball into the back of the net. The Aggies took the lead and the Tritons entered the half down 1-0.
UC San Diego pressed hard in the second half. A shot by junior midfielder Cory Daley went just wide in the 78' and the Tritons out-shot the Aggies, 8-6. A corner for UC San Diego in the last minute of the game looked promising but the Tritons couldn't find the back of the net. The game ended with a 1-0 win for the Aggies.
