IRVINE, Calif. – Trevor Moore of the UC San Diego men's water polo program has been named to the USA Men's Junior National Team roster. Moore will compete with Team USA in the upcoming FINA Men's Junior World Championship (U20) from August 28 to September 5 in Prague, Czech Republic.
Moore, an incoming redshirt freshman for the Tritons, was one of 13 elite athletes selected from around the country.
"It's a great experience for a young scholar-athlete like Trevor to not only have the privilege of representing the United States, but to also travel to such an amazing city as Prague," said UC San Diego Head Coach
Denny Harper. "It is most certainly a great moment for our program, our department, and the university and will give him an awesome opportunity to continue to develop into an outstanding water polo player."
"We all look forward to following Team USA's quest for the gold and hope that Trevor has an amazing tournament," Harper continued.
Moore graduated from Spring Valley's Steele Canyon High School in 2020. A team captain and MVP of both the Cougar water polo team and swim team, Moore earned All-American honors twice, was a three-time All-CIF San Diego Section awardee, and a four-time All-Grossmont League recipient. In addition, he qualified for the swimming state championships twice.
Moore totaled 339 goals for the Cougars throughout four years including a massive senior season with 132 goals to close out his high school career.
The FINA Men's Junior World Championship is composed of 18 national teams – 11 from Europe, three from the Americas, two from Asia, as well as a pair from Africa. Moore and the Americans were drawn into Group B consisting of Spain, Serbia, Slovakia, and Czech Republic.
Following the group stage, the group winners will advance to the quarterfinals, while second place and third place teams will face off in the playoffs. The teams ranked fourth and fifth in their groups will play for 13th – 18th place.
In 2019, UC San Diego finished 20-8 overall and 6-1 in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship play. The Tritons fell to UC Davis in the WWPA Championship game, 14-5.
After UC San Diego opted out of the 2020 regular season that was moved to the spring, the blue and gold look forward to opening the 2021 campaign at the annual Triton Invitational. The event is slated for Sept. 4-5 and will feature a four-game pre-set schedule for each of the 12 schools attending.
