Tritons Edged by Roadrunners

LA JOLLA, California — The UC San Diego women's volleyball team was narrowly defeated in five sets by Big West Conference opponent CSU Bakersfield Friday night at RIMAC Arena.

Scores were 25-19, 19-25, 25-21, 15-25, and 15-13.

With the loss, UC San Diego fell to 10-20 overall and 7-12 in conference action. CSU Bakersfield upped its records to 18-9 and 11-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads posted almost identical attack percentages with UC San Diego finishing at .239 (70-28-176) and CSU Bakersfield coming in at .233 (56-19-159). The Tritons also held advantages in kills (70-56), points (82-72), assists (67-53), and digs (73-64). The Roadrunners held a 9-5 advantage in blocks and both teams put down seven service aces.

UC San Diego was led by outside hitter Ava McInnes, who finished with a match-high 23 kills to go along with four aces, two digs, and a solo block. She hit .271 (23-7-59). Opposite Trinity Castaneda matched her career-high with 17 kills and hit .433 (17-4-30). Outside Zaria Henderson totaled 14 kills while middles Grace Cannon and Dani Mason had nine and five kills, respectively. Mason hit .364 (5-1-11).

Setter Isabela Dobra amassed 60 assists and added 12 digs to complete a double-double.

On the defensive side, libero Naya Dong led all players with 26 digs.

For CSU Bakersfield, Hayley McCluskey ended her night with 19 kills, while Hana Makonova had 14 and Brooke Boiseau had 11. Boiseau also contributed five blocks (one solo).

• Tonight's match was in remembrance of Karen Reis, a former UC San Diego volleyball standout who passed away tragically in 2012.
• It was the second-straight five-set match for the Tritons as they downed Cal State Fullerton in Orange County on November 20.
• It was the 18th double-double of the season for Isabela Dobra.
• The Tritons' 70 kills were their second-most in a match this season.
• Seven senior Tritons will be recognized prior to Saturday's match - Susanna Limb, Jovana Papaz, Emily Hubbard, Trinity Castaneda, Isabela Dobra, Morgan Gallagher, and Cindy Tran.

UP NEXT

UC San Diego plays its final match of the season on Saturday, November 27, at 5 p.m. against Big West opponent Cal Poly (14-16, 12-7). The Mustangs defeated UC Irvine, 3-1, on the road Friday.

It will be Senior Day with the seven senior members of the team being honored prior to the first serve.
