LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's volleyball team earned its 10th win of the season Saturday night in the form of a three set blanking of Vanguard. Scores from RIMAC Arena went 25-19, 25-21, and 27-25.
The non-conference win pushed UC San Diego to 10-3 overall. Vanguard fell to 5-3.Â
Outside hitter Wyatt Harrison paced the Tritons with 17 kills on .382 hitting. In an all-around solid effort, he added five digs, four blocks, and two service aces. Middle blocker Shane Benetz followed with nine kills and five blocks while hitting .583. Fellow middle Logan Clark registered seven kills and four blocks and hit .357. Senior libero Ryan Lew amassed a match high 11 digs, giving him 635 for his career, a total which ranks third all-time at the school.
UC San Diego, which hit .289 (40-14-90), out-blocked Vanguard 9-2 and held a 42-33 advantage in digs.
Already ahead 2-0 in the match, the Tritons came back from a 24-20 deficit in the third set to pick up the sweep. They turned aside four consecutive set points on errors by the Lions, three on the attack and one from the service line. A double block by Clark and Ryan Ka evened it up at 24-24. Vanguard got to set point again on a kill by Kyle Anema, but UC San Diego scored three straight points to win the match. Clark put down a kill for the Tritons and errors again plagued the Lions as they had miscues on a serve and an attack over the final three points of the night.
Anema accounted for much of Vanguard's offense, finishing with 21 kills. The Lions hit .144 (35-20-104).  Â
After 13 non-league contests, UC San Diego, which is receiving votes in the national poll, opens its Big West Conference slate on Saturday, Feb. 15, at No. 4 UC Irvine (7 p.m.).
