LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men's basketball team will host the California Golden Bears at RIMAC Arena on November 10 in the program's first game as an NCAA Division I institution.
Â
The Tritons are competing in their 20th and final season at the Division II level this year. Beginning July 1, UC San Diego will transition to Division I and the Big West Conference.
Â
"We are excited to host Cal in the first men's basketball game of our new Division I era," said
Earl W. Edwards, UC San Diego Director of Athletics. "This is a transformational time on the UC San Diego campus, and we are thrilled to welcome a Pac-12 opponent and a fellow UC institution to tip off this new era in Triton Athletics."
Â
The Tritons and Bears have met four times previously with Cal winning all four matchups. The teams have not met on the hardwood since UC San Diego played as a Division III member in 1985-86.
Â
UC San Diego men's basketball season tickets will go on sale later this month and purchasing season tickets will be the only way to ensure access to the Cal game and every home game next season. All UC San Diego home men's and women's basketball games are broadcast live on ESPN3.
Â
Ranked fourth nationally at the NCAA Division II level, this year's Tritons are off to a 21-1 start and have won a program-record 13 straight games. The team returns to action Thursday night at Chico State.
Â
Next month, UC San Diego will host the CCAA men's and women's basketball championships and could host the NCAA Division II West Regionals should the program retain the top spot in the region.
