LA JOLLA, Calif. - The sixth-ranked University of California San Diego men's volleyball team won its sixth consecutive match Friday night, sweeping UC Santa Cruz in non-conference action at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-22, 25-19, and 25-10.
Equaling the program's longest ever win streak, UC San Diego improved to 13-3 overall. UC Santa Cruz dropped to 12-11.
For the ninth time this season, the Tritons hit over .300, finishing at .350 with 43 kills and 15 errors in 80 attack attempts. They also led the battle in digs (18-14), service aces (6-1), and blocks (8-7) while holding the Banana Slugs to a paltry .031 (21-19-65) attack.
A balanced attack had six Tritons recording multiple kills including Wyatt Harrison (9), Ryan Ka (9), Shane Benetz (8), Logan Clark (6), Berkeley Miesfeld (5), and Charlie Siragusa (5). Benetz and Ka each tallied four blocks and Miesfeld hit .571. Setters Connor Walbrecht and Blake Crisp platooned, going for 22 and 16 assists, respectively. Libero Ryan Lew had five digs.
UC Santa Cruz was led offensively by Aaron Fox with eight kills.
UC San Diego also had a six-match win streak in 1996 as an NCAA Division III team. In fact, the Tritons started that season 6-0.
UC San Diego faces a pair of tough opponents on the road next week in Big West member UC Santa Barbara (3/6, 7 p.m.) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation member UCLA (3/7, 5 p.m.). It will be the first meeting of the season between the Tritons and Gauchos. UC San Diego defeated UCLA in mid-January at RIMAC Arena when the Bruins were ranked third nationally.
