Baseball Splits Twinbill with Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The No. 4 UC San Diego baseball team split the double header against Sonoma State on February 22, winning game one 3-0 and dropping the second game 7-5. The Tritons are now 9-3 and 4-3 in conference play. The final game of the series will take place February 23 at 11:00 am.

GAME 1
Pitching was the most dominant it had been all season as the Triton pitching staff combined for 16 strikeouts. Chris Gilmartin had seven strikeouts and no walks in 5.2 innings pitched to earn the win. Luke Mattson was outstanding in relief and struck out all but two batters he faced for nine strikeouts in 3.1 innings.

The Tritons were patient at the plate and were walked eight times. Everett Lau went 1-for-4 and recorded two RBIs and one hit which went for his first home run as a Triton.

The game was a stalemate through the first two innings. Chris Gilmartin had four strikeouts through the first two innings and struck out all three batters in the second inning.

Everett Lau grounded out to shortstop but brought Aaron Kim in to get the Tritons on the board. Blake Baumgartner registered a hit to center field to put the Tritons up 2-0 in the third.

Lau added a home run to right field in the fifth. The Seawolves came close to scoring in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second and two outs, but Mattson came in and shut them down.

GAME 2
The Tritons were not getting much at the plate through the first three innings. UC San Diego did not register a hit in that span and was only able to get on base thanks to walks.

Anthony Lucchetti registered the first run for the Tritons as he worked his way around the bases and scored on a wild pitch. Brandon Stewart followed it up with a hit to right field that brought Kim home. Everett Lau got an RBI walk to put the Tritons up 3-0.

A four-run rally from Sonoma in the bottom of the fourth gave them the first lead of the series at 4-3. Kim recorded a run in the fifth to tie the game and Baumgartner hit a double to give the Tritons a 5-4 lead in the sixth.

The Seawolves would take the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when they registered three hits and three runs to claim a 7-5 lead.
