LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego sophomore guard
Tyrell Roberts has been named to the 2019-20 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All District® 8 Division II First Team, it was announced Thursday.
The Academic All-District selection is the first of Roberts' career. He is one of five student-athletes chosen to the first team in the district and Roberts will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, which will be voted on beginning next week.
The team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America® program separately recognizes basketball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
Roberts has excelled in the classroom and on the court. Academically, the sophomore holds a 3.41 cumulative GPA, majoring in communications.
Roberts is having a memorable campaign thus far for the Tritons. He has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Week twice. The Sacramento, Calif. native leads the CCAA in scoring (18.5 points per game) and 3-point field goals per game at 3.4. During conference play, he is the CCAA's leading scorer at 18.7 points per game and is tops in 3-point field goal percentage at 46.7% and free throw percentage (87.9%).
Roberts and the fourth-ranked Tritons visit Cal State East Bay on Thursday night. UC San Diego will seek its program-record 17th consecutive victory, and a win earns the Tritons the 2019-20 CCAA regular season title outright.
