Tritons Top Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-1, on Big Island

WAIMEA, Hawai'i – The University of California San Diego women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, topping Hawai'i-Hilo by a 4-1 score at the Fairmont Orchid on Hawai'i island. The Tritons improved to 1-3 on the season, while the Vulcans fell to 0-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Tritons duo of senior captain Becky Chou and freshman Rachel Wagner continued to impress at No. 1 doubles, winning 6-1. UC San Diego clinched the doubles point thanks to a victory at No. 2 doubles by senior captain Chloe Wight and freshman Sophie Pearson.
 
In singles play, the Vulcans got on the scoreboard when UC San Diego's Pearson was forced to retire at No. 2 singles due to injury. Pearson was leading that match, 5-4. Wagner put the Tritons back in front thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Wight earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles to give UC San Diego a 3-1 lead. Senior captain Valeria Corral clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles.
 
QUOTABLE
"This was a great win for us," said UC San Diego coach Liz LaPlante. "We played very well to earn the doubles point. Despite not being at 100 percent, I was proud of the way Valeria [Corral] battled hard to clinch the victory."
