LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 21 University of California San Diego women's basketball team claimed an 82-72 win over Cal State LA at RIMAC Arena on Senior Night. UC San Diego extends its winning streak to 12 while remaining atop the conference standings.
With the victory, the Tritons improve to 20-4 on the season and 16-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Golden Eagles fall to 9-15 overall and 7-11 in conference action.
The Tritons trailed early as the Golden Eagles held the lead throughout the first quarter. UC San Diego put up 20 points, but Cal State LA shot 67% to nab a 24-20 advantage at the end of the first 10 minutes.
With six minutes to go in the second quarter, the Golden Eagles grabbed their largest lead of the night with a 10-point advantage (32-22), but the momentum quickly shifted in the Tritons' favor.
Julia Macabuhay's back-to-back jumpers sparked a 17-2 run in the remaining minutes. UC San Diego earned its first lead of the night and went into halftime up 39-34.
The teams were neck and neck throughout the third quarter, but UC San Diego was ultimately able to extend its advantage by two points (56-49) heading into the final 10 minutes.
The Tritons' final fourth period push was strong as they put up 26 points, their most in a quarter across the night. The Golden Eagles were on their heels, but the Tritons were able to secure the win with a final score of 82-72.
Macabuhay led the Tritons with a career-high 30 points on the night, shooting 52% (11-21). The sophomore finished the game perfect at the free-throw line (6-6). This is the 10
th time that Macabuhay has eclipsed the 20-point mark this season.
Three other Tritons also hit the double-digit mark.
Sydney Brown and
Brianna Claros followed with 14 points apiece. The duo combined for seven of the Tritons' 13 three-pointers. Brown sank four of her shots from long range on the night, while Claros put up three shots from distance.
Tyla Turner rounded out the Tritons' double-digit scorers, as she pitched in 10 points in the win.
Seniors
Stephanie Moore and
Sydney Sharp each contributed seven points and a team-best four assists to the Tritons' efforts. Moore also collected a team-best seven rebounds, while Sharp recorded six.
Next, the Tritons will travel north as they conclude the regular season with three road games. UC San Diego will first take on Cal State East Bay at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Hayward.
