Keila Bosinger Named to NFCA Player of the Year Watch List

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Sophomore Keila Bosinger of the No. 6 University of California San Diego softball team was named to the 2020 Schutt Sports/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year "Watch List." The 50 student-athletes who received the award hail from 38 different programs and 19 different conferences. The news was announced Thursday morning.

Bosinger was one of 11 sophomores to earn spots on the notable lineup. The Chula Vista product put together a phenomenal freshman season, racking up All-California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) First Team and Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-West Region Second Team recognition.
 
Her .403 batting average across CCAA play was third-best in the conference and her .681 slugging percentage ranked fourth. As a rookie, Bosinger led the Tritons in five categories: batting average (.381), RBIs (31), home runs (6), slugging percentage (.612) and on-base percentage (.455). As a result, Bosinger's efforts in 2019 landed her UC San Diego's Offensive Player of the Year.
 
The outfielder has manufactured parallel success in 11 games of 2020. Upon opening the season at the Desert Stinger Tournament with a .471 batting average (8-17) alongside 11 RBIs, three home runs (one grand slam), and one double, she earned All-Tournament distinction. In addition, Bosinger grabbed the CCAA's first Player of the Week accolade as well ucsdtritons.com Athlete of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 3-9.  
 
She currently leads the conference in overall RBIs (13) and a sits in a three-way tie for first in home runs (3).
 
Three other teams from the CCAA had members named to the NFCA "Watch List". No. 20 Chico State produced two candidates and San Francisco State had one player selected.

The NFCA will announce its top 25 finalists for the Player of the Year award on April 23, followed by its top 10 on May 12, and the winner will be revealed on May 28. A student-athlete does not have to be on the "Watch List" to be eligible for the top 25.
 
The Triton standout will continue CCAA action on Feb. 14-15 as UC San Diego travels to Carson to face Cal State Dominguez Hills in a four-game series. First pitch of both Friday and Saturday's doubleheaders will be at 12 p.m. Game two will follow at 2 p.m.
