TURLOCK, Calif. – Sharp shooting in the first two quarters propelled the University of California San Diego women's basketball team (RV) to a 76-56 victory over Stanislaus State tonight.
With the win, the Tritons improve to 10-4 on the season and 6-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Warriors fall to an even 7-7 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
UC San Diego dominated throughout the first two quarters. The Tritons capitalized off sloppy early play by the Warriors, with eight points off turnovers as they grabbed a 22-7 lead in the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Tritons continued their strong offensive push, putting up 22 points again to carry a 44-20 advantage into halftime. At the halfway mark, UC San Diego was shooting 8-16 (50%) from beyond the arc while Stanislaus State was only 1-10 (10%) in its 3-point attempts.
Although the Warriors looked for a comeback as they put up 23 points in the third quarter, the Tritons outscored them 20-13 in the fourth to seal a 76-56 victory.
Four Tritons finished the night with double-digit points.
Tyla Turner led the way with 17 points and was 8-9 at the charity stripe.
Sydney Sharp and
Julia Macabuhay followed closely behind with 15 points apiece. Sharp and Macabuhay each knocked down three 3-pointers as the Tritons ended the night 10-31 from beyond the arc.
Sydney Brown scored 10 points in the win, collecting seven rebounds as well. Brown's seven boards were a game high, tied with Sharp and
Stephanie Moore. As a team, UC San Diego outrebounded Stanislaus State, 43-31.
Brianna Claros and
Kendal Ellenbeck each scored eight points on the night, with Ellenbeck setting a new collegiate best. Claros picked up a game-high seven assists, as many as the entire Warrior squad combined.
"I'm very excited about an excellent win for our team tonight," said Head Coach
Heidi VanDerveer. "I thought that against Stanislaus State's pressure, we had people step up and make big plays for us. Julia [Macabuhay] set the tone. Kendal [Ellenbeck] and Layla [Ybarra-Harvey] came in and gave us great minutes.
"We had people doing the things we need to do in order to be successful, and that's what makes it a great win. We got up early and we weren't quite as strong in the third quarter, but we regrouped and finished the game and that shows our growth."
The Tritons will remain on the road this weekend. UC San Diego will head to Arcata to face Humboldt State at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
