Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Tritons' (RV) Strong Offensive Efforts Lead to Win Over Jacks

ARCATA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego women's basketball team (RV) captured an 88-82 victory over Humboldt State on the road this evening. The Tritons' 88 points are their most in a single game this season.

With the win, UC San Diego improves to 11-4 on the season and 7-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. The Jacks fall to 9-6 overall and an even 5-5 in conference action.

It was a tight game early on as the Tritons and Jacks traded baskets throughout the first quarter. With a score of 21-19, UC San Diego held a slim lead after the first 10 minutes.

In the second quarter, the Tritons held the Jacks to shooting 29% (5-17) compared to the Tritons' 50% (7-14) to grab a 43-34 lead heading into halftime.

After halftime, the Tritons continued their strong shooting in the third quarter, putting up 23 points and stretching their lead to 20 points with 1:31 left in the period.

Although the fourth quarter was the Jacks' strongest of the night, the Tritons held on to clinch an 88-82 win.

As a team, the Tritons shot 52.5% (31-59) on the night and 47.6% (10-21) from beyond the arc. UC San Diego outrebounded Humboldt State, 39-28.

The Tritons turned in a number of impressive individual performances. Julia Macabuhay's 24 points tied her for the game high with the Jacks' Alexia Thrower, who is the conference's leading scorer. This is the fifth time this season that Macabuhay has scored 20 or more points in a game.

Sydney Brown followed closely behind with 23 points. The mark was a new career high for Brown, who also picked up six rebounds.

Tyla Turner finished the night with 19 points and a game-high four assists as she faced her former team. Turner's twin sister Tyra, put up 18 points for Humboldt State.

Sydney Sharp recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the victory. Sharp's 14 rebounds are a new collegiate best for her, topping her previous mark of 11.

"This is an excellent win for our team on a challenging road trip in a tough environment to play in," said Head Coach Heidi VanDerveer. "I thought we were well-prepared. [Assistant Coach Britinee Yasukochi] had a great scout and we really followed it. We executed offensively and had some people really step up.

"I thought Julia Macabuhay continued her phenomenal play, and it was fun to see Sydney Sharp's double-double. She did a great job defensively helping us out. It was also great to see Sydney Brown coming off the bench to help us out in a big way. Tyla Turner came back to Humboldt and gave us, as she has all season, consistent play and was very aggressive. Overall, it was a fantastic win for our team and we're excited about the progress we're making."

Next, UC San Diego will head home to get ready to host Cal Poly Pomona for Spirit Night. The Tritons and Broncos will square off at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
