LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 22 University of California San Diego women's basketball team took down conference-leading Cal State East Bay, 70-58, at RIMAC Arena tonight.
With the win, the Tritons improve to 9-4 on the season and 5-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Pioneers fall to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in conference action.
UC San Diego trailed the Pioneers by three after the first quarter (14-11). The two teams traded baskets throughout most of the second quarter, but in the final 2:30 the Tritons took over. Capitalizing off of three trips to the free throw line and a layup by
Brianna Claros, the Tritons finished the period on an 8-0 run and carried a 28-26 advantage into halftime.
It was a similar story in the third quarter, as the teams continued to battle for the lead. The game was tied up with 2:15 to go in the quarter, and then the Tritons scored six unanswered points to gain what was then their largest lead of the night (42-36).
In the fourth quarter, UC San Diego extended its lead. After a Cal State East Bay basket at the 9:10 mark, the Tritons held the Pioneers scoreless for almost the next four minutes. Ultimately, the Tritons outscored the Pioneers 28-22 in the final 10 minutes to capture the 70-58 win.
Julia Macabuhay went off for a career-best 26 points on the night, which were also a game best. She shot 12-13 (92%) at the charity stripe. As a team, the Tritons finished the night 26-30 (87%) at the free throw line.
Isabelle Parker was the Tritons' rebound leader, tying her collegiate high with nine rebounds.
Emily Cangelosi also tied her career best in rebounds, with five.
Along with Parker and Cangelosi,
Madison Baxter and
Kendal Ellenbeck recorded their first starts of their Triton careers against Cal State East Bay.
Next, the Tritons will hit the road. UC San Diego will face Stanislaus State at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9.
