LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 15th-ranked University of California San Diego men's volleyball team had its four-match win streak halted Friday as it was defeated in four sets by Concordia Irvine, which is tied for 13th in the national rankings. Scores from RIMAC Arena went 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, and 25-21.
UC San Diego fell to 7-3 overall on the season. This past Tuesday, the Tritons defeated Princeton, also tied for 13th, at home to move to 7-2 for just the second time in program history.
It was a slow night offensively for UC San Diego, which hit just .181 (49-26-127), its second lowest of the season. The Tritons swung at .469 in the second set, but dropped all the way to -.031 in the third.
Outside hitter Kyle McCauley continued putting up huge numbers for the Tritons as he finished with a match high 19 kills to go along with seven digs, four blocks, and two assists. The junior has registered a double digit kill total in eight of 10 matches.
Outside Wyatt Harrison, the reigning Big West Conference Player of the Week, had 10 kills and eight digs, while middle blocker Shane Benetz had seven kills and three blocks. Senior setter Connor Walbrecht led UC San Diego on the defensive side of the ball with 10 digs while also assisting on 39 kills. Middle Gabe Avillion ended his night with four block assists. Charlie Siragusa was solid from the outside, hitting .500 with six kills and no errors in 12 attacks.
Concordia (5-3) hit .304 (46-12-112). Raymond Barsemian and Jordan Hoppe each had 11 kills and Mclain Mott totaled a match high 11 digs.
A rematch is just around the corner as the Tritons and Eagles go at it again on Tuesday, Feb. 4, in Irvine at 7 p.m.
