LA JOLLA, Calif. - Kyle McCauley had another stellar night but it wasn't enough as the University of California San Diego men's volleyball team was swept by sixth-ranked Lewis Saturday at RIMAC Arena. Scores were 25-22, 25-20 and 25-19.
UC San Diego fell to 1-1 on the young season. Lewis, out of Romeoville, Ill., and the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA) improved to 3-1.
After hitting .342 in a five set win against No. 11 Loyola Thursday, the Tritons hit .156 (30-18-77) tonight while the Flyers swung at .303 (34-11-76). The visitors also led in service aces (9-5), blocks (10-6.5), and digs (24-19).
McCauley, who had 20 kills in the contest versus Loyola, added another 17 - a match best - to his season total tonight. The junior outside hitter attacked at .481 with four errors in 27 attempts. He also added six digs and two blocks.
Junior opposite Collin Shannon and sophomore middle blocker Shane Benetz had four blocks apiece, while junior outside Wyatt Harrison floored four service aces and senior setter Connor Walbrecht finished with 28 assists. Senior libero Ryan Lew had six digs.
Lewis, which is predicted to win the MIVA this season, got 13 kills and a match high seven digs from Ryan Coenen. Kyle Bugee and Tyler Mitchum each had four blocks. Mitchum hit .538 with seven kills and no errors in 13 swings.
In the middle of a four match home stand to open its season, UC San Diego hosts Vassar on Wednesday, Jan. 15. First serve is set for 6 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
