POMONA, Calif. – The No. 22 University of California San Diego women's basketball team fell to Cal Poly Pomona, 69-61, in overtime this afternoon. With the outcome, UC San Diego moves to 8-3 on the season and 4-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action. The Broncos improve to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
It was a back and forth affair, with 14 lead changes throughout the afternoon. With a 13-13 tie after the first quarter, the Broncos had the upper hand heading into halftime (29-25), but the Tritons' third quarter efforts gave them a slim lead (40-38) entering the final 10 minutes of regulation. The teams remained neck-and-neck during the fourth quarter, and with the score tied up at 54-54, the Tritons and Broncos headed into overtime.
UC San Diego was unable to capture the lead during overtime. The Broncos capitalized on eight of their 10 free throw chances in the extra five minutes, and ultimately came away with the win.
Sydney Sharp recorded a double-double in the loss. All 12 of Sharp's points came off 3-pointers, as she went 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. The North Tustin native also collected 10 rebounds.
Tyla Turner nearly had a double-double as well. Turner's 14 points and four assists were both team highs, and she picked up nine rebounds.
Brianna Claros and
Julia Macabuhay also put up double-digit points, with 11 apiece. Claros and Macabuhay each contributed three assists too.
"I'm disappointed because I don't think we were locked in defensively," said Head Coach
Heidi VanDerveer. "We were able to fight our way back in the second half and had a chance to win in regulation, but we needed a better effort from the beginning. In the second half I thought we played hard, but we couldn't flip the switch quickly enough. We have a break now and we have a chance to figure out what we need to work on and apply that."
The Tritons will return to action after the New Year. UC San Diego will host Cal State Monterey Bay at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 2 at RIMAC Arena.
