Double Double for Sydney Sharp as No. 22 Tritons Take Down Toros

CARSON, Calif. – The No. 22 University of California San Diego women's basketball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills, 85-63, at the Torodome tonight. UC San Diego's 85 points are its most in a single game so far this season.
 
With the victory, the Tritons improve to 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action. The Toros fall to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
 
Although the teams started off trading baskets in the early minutes of the first quarter, the Tritons put together a 12-0 run to shift the momentum. The Tritons held a 25-19 lead coming out of the first quarter, with eight different Tritons putting up baskets in the opening period.
 
UC San Diego protected its lead throughout the entire second quarter, but the Toros managed to pull within three at halftime (42-39).
 
After halftime, it looked like the first quarter all over again. The Toros tied the game, 49-49, with 4:22 to go in the third, but the Tritons responded with an 11-0 run to regain their lead.
 
UC San Diego extended its advantage throughout the final 10 minutes. Outscoring the Toros 25-13 in the fourth quarter, the Tritons came away with an 85-63 win.
 
It was an impressive night for many of the Tritons individually. With a game-high 10 rebounds as well as 16 points, Sydney Sharp recorded a double-double.
 
Tyla Turner led the team with 18 points, matching her season high. She shot 7-for-13 on the night and contributed five assists as well.
 
Also with five assists was Julia Macabuhay, who scored 16 points in the win.
 
Rounding out the Tritons' double-digit scoring was Sydney Brown. Shooting 6-for-8, Brown matched her collegiate best of 15 points.
 
Brianna Claros (9), Isabelle Parker (6), Stephanie Moore (4), and Kendal Ellenbeck (1) also put up baskets in the Tritons' victory.

"I thought this was a great win for our team after a solid week of exams, practicing, and improving," said Head Coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We had a commitment to getting better defensively and I thought that was solid, especially in the second half. We also really worked on our zone offense and we had great ball movement tonight.

"We had people step up and make big shots, and people came off the bench and contributed. I thought it was a great team effort in beating a very talented Dominguez Hills team. I'm proud of our efforts and we'll have keep working hard to improve every day."
