LA JOLLA, Calif. – The No. 6 University of California San Diego women's basketball team fell to Cal State San Marcos, 69-63, at RIMAC Arena on Thursday evening. With the loss, UC San Diego moves to 3-1 on the season and starts conference play at 0-1. The Cougars improve to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The Tritons narrowly trailed the Cougars throughout the first and second quarters. After the first, the Tritons were down 14-12, and again faced a narrow two-point deficit with a score of 29-25 at halftime.
With a 48-40 Cougar lead at the end of the third quarter, the Tritons pushed hard in the fourth. With 7:30 remaining in regulation, UC San Diego put up six unanswered points to cut down the Cougars' advantage. However, just like the Tritons, the fourth quarter was the Cougars' strongest of the night. UC San Diego ultimately fell, 69-63.
Reigning CCAA Athlete of the Week
Julia Macabuhay had another strong performance, scoring a game-high 23 points.
Sydney Brown also put up double-digit points, with 12 on the night.
Sydney Sharp was UC San Diego's rebound leader, recording six and putting up seven points as well.
The Tritons will look to bounce back when they return to action this weekend. UC San Diego will travel to Cal State San Bernardino to face the Coyotes at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Coussoulis Arena.
