SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The No. 6 University of California San Diego women's basketball team defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 70-59, at Coussoulis Arena on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, UC San Diego improves to 4-1 on the season and an even 1-1 in conference play, while the Coyotes remain winless at 0-5 overall and 0-2 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.
The Tritons led the first few minutes of the first quarter, but the Coyotes were able to able to respond with 10 unanswered points to grab a slim 13-9 advantage. Back-to-back 3-pointers by
Julia Macabuhay shifted the momentum back in the Tritons' favor, and the Tritons outscored the Coyotes 16-4 in the final three minutes of the period to take a 25-17 lead.
UC San Diego maintained its lead throughout the second quarter.
Sydney Brown contributed eight of the 18 points the Tritons put up in the second period, while
Tyla Turner was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line during that span.
The Coyotes pulled within six as they outscored the Tritons 17-12 in the third quarter, but the deficit was too much for the Coyotes to overcome. UC San Diego extended its lead during the fourth quarter and captured a 70-59 win.
Throughout the game, UC San Diego went 15-for-39 from beyond the arc. The Tritons were just one away from matching their program record for most 3-pointers in a game, as they recorded 16 against Stanislaus State on Jan. 31.
UC San Diego's success at the free throw line also gave it a boost, as it was 11-for-12 in free throw attempts.
Macabuhay's 18 points were a team best, while Brown (15) and Turner (11) also put up double-digits. Brown's 15 points topped her previous collegiate high of 14.
Coming off the bench,
Madison Baxter made her first appearance of the season, scoring nine points. The Triton bench contributed 33 points throughout the afternoon.
"I thought it was a very good win for our team," said Head Coach
Heidi VanDerveer. "We're a work in progress right now and we had people step up and take really good shots. Madison [Baxter] coming off the bench did a great job, Julia [Macabuhay] hit big shots, and Sydney [Sharp] did a great job guarding people. We're working on a lot of new combinations with a lot of new faces and it's great to see people stepping up to the challenge."
The Tritons will return to action at the Malika Sports Tours Oahu Thanksgiving Classic in Hawaii. UC San Diego's first opponent of the tournament will be Minnesota State University Moorhead, and the two squads will face off at 11 a.m. on Friday.
