No. 4 UC San Diego Cruises to 81-54 win over San Marcos

LA JOLLA, Calif. – Eleven UC San Diego players got into the scoring column as the fourth-ranked Tritons rolled to an 81-54 victory over Cal State San Marcos in the CCAA opener for both squads Thursday night at RIMAC Arena.
 
The Tritons improved to 5-0, while the Cougars fell to 4-2.
 
Redshirt senior center Chris Hansen led all scorers with 17 points, and he pulled down nine more rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard Tyrell Roberts scored 12 points, and redshirt junior guard Mikey Howell added a season-high 12 in the win.
 
Leading 13-11 with 13:02 to go in the first half, UC San Diego went on a 19-2 spurt to take a 32-13 lead with 5:07 on the clock. Six Tritons got into the scoring column during that run, which gave the home team its largest lead of the half.
 
UC San Diego knocked down five three-pointers and held the Cougars to 1-for-6 from long range in the first half. Hansen scored 12 points and grabbed four rebounds over the first 20 minutes. The CCAA's leader in assists, Howell added five more helpers in the first without committing a turnover. He finished the night with seven assists.
 
The Tritons stretched their lead in the second half, as they knocked off their local rivals from North County for the fifth consecutive time. The 54 Cougar points marked the fewest allowed by UC San Diego so far this season.
 
The Tritons shot 48% from the floor (31-64), and out-rebounded the Cougars, 42-33. UC San Diego had 40 points in the paint in the win.
 
Cal State San Marcos shot 40% for the game (23-57). The Cougars were paced by 12 points apiece from Marcus Brown and Alex Gil-Fernandez.
 
No. 4 UC San Diego hits the road for the first time in CCAA play on Sunday, when the Tritons travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a 3 p.m. contest.
