SPIRIT NIGHT COLLEGE COMPETITION RULES AND POLICIES 

OBJECTIVE:  To have a friendly competition among the six colleges centered around the Feb. 9 UCSD basketball doubleheader vs. Cal Poly Pomona at RIMAC Arena. The women's game tips off at 5:30 PM followed by the men at 7:30 PM.

There will be four events/competitions in which the colleges will be awarded points according to their performance. The college with the most overall points will win the Spirit Night Trophy (Cup of Cheer) which will be presented following the men's basketball game. The focus is on bringing all of the colleges together as one—in support of UC San Diego.

Tailgate: The tailgate will begin at 4:30pm on RIMAC Field in the southeast corner. Students will be swiped in when they arrive and will count in the Spirit Night attendance count. Present at the tailgate will be complimentary food from Papa Johns, Board & Brew, Luna Grill and Hot Dogs from UCSD Concessions as well as bottled water. UCSD Athletics will be providing interactive games/inflatables as well as a DJ. There will also be promotional items given to those that arrive at the tailgate and go into the game early. At 5:30pm there will be an organized “Rock, Paper, Scissor” Tournament with the winning individual gaining 3 bonus points for their college in the Spirit Night Competition.  The tailgate will stop serving food at 6:00 pm and students will have to vacate the area at 6:30 pm and head into the arena.

Basketball Game: The UCSD Men's and Women's Basketball teams will be facing off against one of the top teams in the conference in the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos. Women tip off at 5:30pm followed by the men at 7:30pm. Seating will be open (not assigned by college) so arrive early for the best seats in the best sections! At halftime of both games we will have our traditional “musical chairs” promotion where additional points will be added to colleges scores.  Tickets are FREE for UC San Diego students with their ID and any UC San Diego Faculty or Staff can get in for the reduced price of $5 per ticket for everyone in their group (normally $10).

Competition:

Game Attendance: A computerized (card swipe) attendance count for each college will be set up in the RIMAC Arena lobby as well as the entrance of the tailgate on RIMAC Field. At 6:00 PM, a preliminary count will be made and those in attendance at that time will be multiplied by 1.5. A second count will take place at 7:30 PM and those arriving between those two times will count as one. Scoring: 12-10-8-6-4-2

Halftime “Musical Chairs”: The traditional halftime competition of “basketball musical chairs” will feature one contestant from each college (college designates). There will be contests at the half of both women's and men's games. Point breakdowns will be awarded for both contests. One participant needs to be chosen for the women's game and one for the men's game. PLEASE NOTE: we need to get the names of each of the individuals you have selected to compete BEFORE HAND. Ideally if we could get those at the absolute latest the day before that is necessary. Scoring: 6-5-4-3-2-1 (each game)

“Rock, Paper, Scissors” Tournament: At the pregame tailgate at 5:30pm all students whom want to participate are allowed to play in the lightning fast “Rock, Paper, Scissors” Tournament. The last remaining student and winner will gain 3 bonus Spirit Night Competition points added to their colleges total. Scoring: 3 bonus points

For Game Attendance, points will be awarded as follows:

                        1^st place           12 points                     4^th place           6 points

                        2^nd place          10 points                     5th place          4 points

                        3^rd place           8 points                       6^th place           2 points

For the other contests, points awarded as follows:

                        1^st place           6 points                       4^th place           3 points

                        2^nd place          5 points                       5^th place           2 points

                        3^rd place           4 points                       6^th place           1 point
